Blockchain in the network society: first lessons learned

On the 15th of December 2021 the CHAIN-team gave a presentation on its project “Blockchain in the network society: Transparency, Trust, and Legitimacy by Design” during an online meeting organised by NWO MVI.

Jurgen Goossens gave a quick review of the overall project goals, research questions and some highlights of our project so far.

Subsequently, Gert Meyers shed light on the first lessons learned during the first year of CHAIN. One of the central questions of our project is: “What happens after the announcement of the use case?” It is often presented as if social problems can be solved with technological solutions such as blockchain. But what happens after the announcement of the use case and how are those technological solutions developed? This question is often disregarded.

Therefore, CHAIN decided to closely follow and observe the pilot “The Red Button” of the CJIB: a blockchain pilot based on self-sovereign identity to help people in debt signaling inability to pay in a timely fashion and giving them so called ‘debt rest’. Several lessons can be drawn from our preliminary analysis of this first case study.
