Blog: ‘What is trust in technology, and can we trust AI?’

Antonia Stanojević has written a blog for the Digital Constitutionalist about the appropriateness of trust as a lens through which the relationship between humans and technology can be viewed. The opinion piece emphasizes the complexity of applying the concept of trust to technology, especially in the context of AI and AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). It highlights that, while trust is often discussed in human relationships, it can be relevant in our relationship with technology, particularly as technologies become more anthropomorphized and integrated into society. However, it warns that efforts to create “trustworthy AI” may be misguided, as trust is a dynamic and subjective concept that cannot be fully regulated or equated with mere risk acceptability. This suggests a need for a deeper understanding and cautious approach when addressing trust in emerging technologies.
